Chen Min Design Office is a multi-faceted design practice established by
designer Min Chen whose production ranges from the design of objects to
technological products and interior architecture.
Industrial designer Min Chen was born in an artistic family in Hangzhou, China. He has started his training in Chinese calligraphy at a very young age and has maintained an interest in traditional Chinese arts and crafts to this day.
In 2001, he went to study at the Köln International School of Design (KISD) for two years. He then successfully completed his BDes(Bachelor of Design) at Design Academy Eindhoven. After working with Satyendra Pakhale in Amsterdam, he went to the Domus Academy in Milan for his MA in Design, graduating with distinction. He then worked at the Domus Academy as a project assistant and also started working on his freelance projects. In 2010, he returned to China (Guangdong), focusing on advanced industrial design.
In 2012, he set up his own office in Hangzhou. It has provided design services for SWAROVSKI, Veneta Cucine , NIKE, Starbucks, LOEWE , de Sede, ROLF BENZ, NATUZZI and other international brands. From the same year till now, he has been invited to teach at the China Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, and Tongji University in Shanghai.
As the only finalist of the 2018 LOEWE Craft Prize in China, Chen Min and his Hangzhou Stool have sparked a new wave of Chinese craft in London, and have been invited to be an expert judge of the 2019 Craft Prize. The New York Times reported Min Chen's design story and his studio in The special topic "HANGZHOU: Ancient City with Electric Dreams". In 2020, As a co-sponsor, Min invited and organized designers from Europe and Southeast Asia to participate in the Create Cures, the public welfare activity aiming to promote the development of public health in a designer's way, won the 2020 IDEAT IDEALIST VISION AWARD. And he curated the exhibition --Neobject for Design Shanghai, which shows the multiple dimensions of traditional craft innovation, and earned him "the one who knows best about craft among designers".
Min has great interest in languages, which are important means of communication. Among other Chinese languages, he speaks Mandarin and Cantonese, as well as German, English, Japanese, Italian and Dutch. He also considers design as a language, which has its origins, depth, and history. It stays open and evolves over the time. It expresses life in all aspects, and becomes the essence of it.
Min’s goal is to find the Chinese language in the world of design.
